Restorative inlays and onlays are a special type of restoration treatment that is used in place of conventional composite fillings. They are custom made out of a single piece of material and bonded to the tooth to restore its strength and functionality.
A restorative inlay is strictly inside the top grooves of the tooth, hence the term. A restorative onlay may be partially interior to the tooth but also covers part of the chewing surface. Restorative onlays may also called partial crowns.
Restorative inlays and onlays are used in place of conventional composite fillings when there is too much decay for a filling to restore the structural integrity of the tooth. If the decay is severe enough, a full crown might be necessary. Restorative inlays and onlays are an intermediate option. Occasionally, some patients may also need a restorative inlay or onlay after suffering a dental injury.
Several different materials are used to create restorative inlays and onlays. Ceramics, composites, and porcelain are the most commonly used. Gold is sometimes chosen as well. El Segundo Modern Dentistry recommends porcelain for most patients.
Restorative inlays and onlays are durable and affordable alternatives to full dental crowns when a filling simply isn’t enough to properly restore a tooth. They bond permanently to the tooth to strengthen it and restore it to full functioning. They are also normally tooth-colored, so it won’t be obvious that you have them.
When properly cared for, restorative inlays and onlays are extremely durable and should last you for many years. To care for your restorative inlay or onlay, follow a good oral hygiene routine and get your cleanings twice a year in our El Segundo office.
You’ll need two appointments at our El Segundo office to get your restorative inlay or onlay. The first visit will be dedicated to removing the decay and crafting and placing a temporary restorative inlay or onlay. Our staff will also take impressions of the tooth to send to a dedicated lab that will create your permanent inlay or onlay.
The permanent device will arrive at the office a few weeks later and you’ll return to have it permanently bonded to the tooth. Your provider will also check it for fit and comfort at this time.
Your cost will depend on a number of factors, including the location of the tooth to be restored, the materials you choose, and what kind of coverage your dental insurance provides for restorative inlays and onlays.
